It was with pleasure that FIBREFIX was approached by Exeter House Special School to erect a purpose built covered walkway from the existing mobile homes to the school. From concept through to design and final fitting this was going to be a challenge.
Design
The pre-requisite from the management committee was to make sure that the structure was strong enough to withstand extreme winds, robustness from the children’s point of view and user friendly so as not to impede upon the existing play area too much.
Quantal designers, Hilti Technical and FIBREFIX all set about the task and managed to agree to all design criteria that was set down by all parties
Manufacture
This in itself could have presented many a challenge. Quantal presented a detailed delivery schedule that incorporated the steel deliveries alongside those of the roof to ensure a smooth transition from warehouse to site. Deliveries were by crane assisted lorry to help with the logistics and to help minimise down time.
Installation
Our major challenge was to work around the special needs of the children and to ensure their security and safety at all times. Our specialist team of installers realised from the outset that this could not be done during the working day 9am to 4pm as all areas were in constant use.
Upon consultation with the management of Exeter House FIBREFIX agreed to work through the night under spotlights.
All work was carried out from 4pm to 7am and all work areas were left secure , safe, clean and tidy for the children to resume their school day unhindered.
The school had no interruption to the school day and did not have to make alternative arrangements to accommodate the children.
Overview
Throughout the contract, additions to the original specification were added including concrete ramps and aluminium side screens. The covered walkway now provides secure and weatherproof access to classrooms for staff and children. It has been a great pleasure and privilege to work alongside Exeter House.
