Cara Glass design and install conservatories, orangeries and replacement conservatory roofs for homes in Romsey and the villages around it. Every room is made to measure for your house and fitted by our own dedicated installation teams, with a 10-year guarantee.
Whether you want a bright new room overlooking the garden, an orangery that feels part of the house, or a better roof on an older conservatory, we'll help you choose the design that suits your home and your budget.
A conservatory or orangery adds a room to your home without the cost and upheaval of moving.
Use your new room as a dining room, a lounge, a home office or a playroom. Modern glazing and roof systems make it far more comfortable through the seasons than older conservatories.
From period homes near the town centre to family homes on Romsey's newer estates, we design every conservatory to suit the age, style and materials of the house it joins.
We're a family-run business, and your conservatory is fitted by our own dedicated installation teams.
The right conservatory style depends on the house it joins. A Victorian conservatory, with its faceted bay end and decorative ridge, sits naturally against a period property. An Edwardian conservatory has a square floor plan, giving the most usable space for its size. A lean-to suits bungalows and terraced houses where there's limited height below the upstairs windows, and a P-shaped conservatory joins a lean-to and a Victorian section to wrap around a corner or create two separate areas. Where none of the standard shapes fit, we'll design a bespoke conservatory for you.
uPVC conservatories need very little upkeep and can be colour coded and foiled to look like wood, so your conservatory can match your windows and doors.
An orangery feels more like an extension than a conservatory. Solid pillars, a solid ceiling around the edge and a glazed roof lantern in the centre give a room that's private and comfortable, with light pouring in from above. It's a popular choice for period homes, where an all-glass room can look out of place, and for anyone who wants the new room to feel part of the house.
The building work, including the base and pillars, is carried out by our own team or by trusted contractors, depending on what your project needs.
Many older conservatories have polycarbonate roofs that are now discoloured, noisy in the rain and hard to keep at a comfortable temperature. Replacing the roof is often the quickest way to transform the room, without rebuilding the whole conservatory.
We fit Ultraframe roofs: glass and polycarbonate roofs, Quantal aluminium roofs, and tiled or hybrid roofs using Ultraframe's Livinroof and UltraRoof systems. A tiled or hybrid roof makes the room feel more like a proper extension, while a glass roof with performance glazing lets in plenty of light. Ultraframe roofs are designed with Ultraframe's U-Design software, which uses your postcode to work out the wind and snow loads, so the roof is built for the weather where you live.
We'll assess your existing conservatory before recommending anything. We generally recommend replacing older frames at the same time as the roof, although it isn't always necessary, and with a warm roof conversion we'll check that the existing frames and supporting structure are suitable for the new roof. Replacement roofs are fitted by our own dedicated teams and come with our 10-year guarantee.
Planning permission and Building Regulations are two different things, and what you need depends on your project.
Planning permission is about whether you can build: the size, height and position of the new room, and its effect on your neighbours. Some conservatories fall within permitted development, which allows certain extensions without a planning application, but it depends on your house and where it is. We'll help you understand what to consider, although getting any planning permission you need remains your responsibility as the homeowner, and Test Valley Borough Council's planning team can also advise.
Building Regulations are about how the room is built: its structure, insulation and safety. Whether they apply depends on the project. Converting a conservatory to a solid or warm roof generally needs Building Regulations approval, because it turns the conservatory into a permanent, insulated room that feels like an extension of the house. We arrange and manage that approval as part of the project. A straightforward replacement of a glass or polycarbonate roof doesn't automatically need it, and we'll explain what applies to your project when we visit.
The cost of a conservatory depends on its size, style and roof, so every quote is worked out for your home. Call us on 01722 744424 or request a free, no-obligation quote online, and we'll arrange a visit to measure up and talk through the options. We also offer finance to help spread the cost.
Alongside conservatories, we fit double glazing in Romsey, roof lanterns and secondary glazing, so if you're planning other work on the house, we can quote for it at the same time.
